June 2008
Hello Readers
It seems that my decision to make a start on the newsletter sets of a chain reaction in the weather cycle and brings unseasonal rains. The cold however is right on time but living in Durban we are more fortunate than you guys further inland who get slightly cooler than us beach boys.
I took the motorbike for a quick scout up Sani Pass on the weekend. There was just a sprinkling of snow on the peaks and it was actually quite warm on top, so you guys with the snow chains had better sit tight for a while and make yourselves busy at the gates event this weekend.
Keep the weekend of the 4th – 6th July open for our important event taking place at Broadlease Farm. See advert below. For those of you that missed this weekend’s gates event, it was a good one…down in the valley….with a river crossing just to get to the event.
A reminder again that, the committee for 2008 has a few vacancies for members who would like to put something back into their club. Come on guys, if you are out there come and assist us, it can be very rewarding.
Enjoy the Newsletter and we’ll see you on the trail or at the next committee meeting!
Ed

LROC KZN 20th
at
BROADLEAZE
4—6 July 2008
The Broadleaze LROC KZN 20th is about involving all in the vehicle. Its not a vehicle breaking trail, but one suitable for all Land Rovers. A short trail with hidden clue’s and riddles, along with a few tasks. Camp over on Friday / Saturday or just come for the main trail on Sunday and the FUN.
EVENTS SCHEDULE.
For the campers arrive on Friday / Saturday . Camping is
rustic, with a few hire rocket toilets and a bush shower. Braai fires
and fire wood will be provided all weekend.
The event on Sunday will start at 08h00 for 09h00.
A BYO braai for lunch on Sunday with fires provided.
DIRECTIONS TO BROADLEAZE
From Durban take the N3 to PMB. Turn off the N3 at the
Market Street off ramp. Go past the Market entrance and turn left into
CB Downs road. At the next robot turn left into Murray Road. Continue up
Murray Road to the top of the hill. The entrance to BROADLEAZE is at 200
Murray road on the right after the Water Reservoir. Follow the LROC
signs to the Camp area.
For those who have been to our Broadleaze events in the past you will be familiar with the type of event. For those new to Broadleaze, you do not want to miss it. No serious 4x4 trail but various obstacles along the trail that will involve all in the vehicle, that means the wife and kids. Its a totally fun event and is suitable for all Land Rover's, old and new, even the Freelander.
Please remember that vehicles need appropriate recovery points ad equipment for most if not all trails. Even vehicles like the Defender do not come out with adequate recovery points. Please ensure that you have the correct recovery points and gear to assist someone or to be assisted yourself should the need arise.
Emphasis is also placed on the fact that most events require booking well in advance. If you are interested in attending an event, please notify the relevant committee as soon as possible, as a lack of interest may lead to events being cancelled.
TRAIL GRADING: All our events from now on will have a Trail Grading according to the 5 grades below.
1.
Complete novice soft dirt road trail, no low range required. Suitable
for all Land Rovers including the Freelander.
2.
Limited low range required but suitable for
the novice driver. Suitable for all Land Rovers with certain trails not
suitable for the Freelander.
3.
Low range and limited off road knowledge required. Suitable for all Land
Rovers except the Freelander.
4.
A low range technical trail suitable for the experienced. The
inexperienced will be able to do the trail, as assistance will be
available from the more experienced members. Suitable for all Land
Rovers except the Freelander.
5. Extremely technical, suitable for the experienced only with the possibility of vehicle damage. Only suitable for "Series" Land Rovers and maybe a few others.
3rd Gates Event 2008 June 22: Inchanga Valley
It seems that the new venue for our gates event has resurrected some interest in you members, judging by the turnout on Sunday. We had approximately 25 vehicles both modified and standard with some “Jap” models thrown in for good measure. George and crew had obviously again been hard at work putting the course together but could not take part in the competition as they had incurred some damage to the rear of Ryan’s Rangie on a trial run of one of the gates…so the story goes.
Anyhow, it was good to see several new members and families present and I think that this is a positive sign as far as our club’s event go. Thanks to all who took part and especially to those who assisted and set up the course, lit braai fires etc.

3rd Gates Event 2008 June 08 : Inanda Valley
The venue used this time was in the Inanda valley, on the banks of the Umgeni River upstream from Inanda Dam. 34 vehicles signed the register with a few more turning up during the day. 21 vehicles took on the challenge of the gates and passed through the 1st gate.
The options for the gates in this part of the valley are many, with river sand, mud, water and rocks all mixed together. With a total of 360 points on offer, the highest score recorded was only 260. The gates were not impossible but had a few tricky elements thrown in. An overall good day apart from the Ryan’s Rangie diff, which I managed to destroy before the gates event. Thanks to all who took part or just came down for the day and provided support from the side.
BUT we still have a few vehicles without recovery points. Next time the vehicles without recovery points will be restricted from certain of the gates.
